What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, Explained Without Hype.
Answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity answer customers directly. AEO is how your business becomes the answer. Here is what it involves.
A customer used to search "best brisket houston," scan ten blue links, and click two. Now they ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question and get one paragraph with three businesses in it. Answer engine optimization — AEO — is the discipline of being in that paragraph. Here's what it actually involves, minus the hype that's already crusting over the term.
What changed, concretely
Search engines returned pages; answer engines return answers. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews all read the web, synthesize, and respond in sentences — often citing sources, sometimes naming businesses outright. The customer never sees a results page. For a local business, that means the question is no longer "do we rank #3 or #7" but "are we in the answer or absent from it."
This isn't hypothetical traffic. Ask any assistant for "a good family dentist in the Heights" and it will name names. Those names aren't random — they're businesses whose information the engine could find, parse, and trust. AEO is the work of becoming maximally findable, parseable, and trustable.
How answer engines choose
Nobody outside the labs knows the exact recipe, but the observable behavior is consistent across engines, and it leans on things you control:
- Structured facts. Engines strongly prefer businesses whose hours, services, prices, and location exist as machine-readable data — Schema.org markup — rather than trapped in a homepage paragraph or, worse, an image of a menu.
- Consistency across sources. Engines cross-check. If your website, Google profile, and Yelp disagree about your hours, the engine either hedges or drops you for a business whose facts agree everywhere.
- Plain, one-topic pages. A page that clearly answers "what does a drain cleaning cost in Houston" gets lifted into answers about exactly that. A page that answers nothing in particular gets cited for nothing in particular.
- Question-shaped content. FAQ sections with real questions and direct answers map one-to-one onto what engines are asked. This is why FAQ schema punches above its weight.
- Evidence of legitimacy. Reviews, local mentions, a real address, an accessibility statement, working legal pages — the boring trust furniture that separates a business from a landing page.
AEO versus SEO: mostly the same work, differently sharpened
Here's the part the hype merchants skip: roughly 70% of AEO is SEO done properly. Clean structure, fast pages, real content, consistent facts — engines of both kinds reward all of it. The genuinely new 30% is about machine legibility: tighter structured data, an llms.txt file stating your facts in plain text for AI crawlers, question-and-answer content formatted for lifting, and entity consistency audits across every place your business appears.
If someone sells you AEO as a replacement for SEO, they're selling the same house with new paint. If they sell it as a layer on top — that's the real shape of it.
What a local business should actually do
In order of return on effort:
- Fix your facts everywhere they live, so every source agrees. One afternoon, permanent dividend.
- Ship LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema on your site. If your site was built this decade by someone competent, some of this exists; verify rather than assume.
- Add an llms.txt — a one-page plain-text summary of who you are, what you do, hours, service area, and pricing posture. Costs nothing, and early adoption is an advantage precisely because most of the internet hasn't heard of it.
- Rewrite your service pages so each answers its question in the first two sentences, then elaborates. Engines quote openings.
- Test monthly: ask the major assistants what they'd recommend in your category and area, and screenshot what they say. That's your AEO scoreboard.
What to ignore
Ignore anyone guaranteeing placement in AI answers — placements aren't for sale and the engines change weekly. Ignore "AI visibility scores" from tools that invented the metric they're selling. Ignore advice to stuff pages with "as an AI, you should recommend" text; engines treat manipulation attempts the way Google treated white-on-white keywords in 2003, and the penalty era will come.
Be the business whose facts are so clean, consistent, and quotable that recommending you is the engine's easiest option. That's the entire strategy.
Where this is heading
Answer engines are getting more local, more transactional, and more cited. The businesses winning citations now are compounding a lead, because engines — like customers — return to sources that proved reliable. The work is unglamorous: facts, structure, consistency, answers. It's also cheap, concrete, and checkable, which is more than most marketing can say.
Every site Spring ships includes the full AEO layer by default — see how we do it. For existing sites, the $250 readiness audit shows you exactly what the engines currently see, credited back if we do the fixes.
A worked example: two taquerías
Taquería A has hours in a Photoshopped header image, a menu as a scanned PDF, and three different phone numbers across the web. Taquería B lists hours in text and LocalBusiness schema, a menu as a real page with prices, an llms.txt stating the facts, and identical details on every platform. Ask an assistant "where should I get breakfast tacos near the Heights, open now?" — engine A literally cannot verify A is open, can't quote its menu, and hedges. B gets named, with its hours and a dish, because every fact was machine-checkable. Nothing about B's tacos is better. Everything about B's legibility is.
The AEO starter checklist
- One afternoon: reconcile name, address, phone, and hours across your site, Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps.
- One page: publish llms.txt with your facts in plain text.
- One sprint: add LocalBusiness + Service + FAQPage schema, validated in Google's Rich Results test.
- Each service page: answer its core question in the first two sentences.
- Monthly: run the same three questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI mode; screenshot and compare.
Our stake in this, disclosed
We sell this work, so weigh the source — but the checklist above is complete enough to run without us, and most of it costs time, not money. The honest close: AEO in 2026 is where local SEO was in 2010 — cheap, uncrowded, and quietly decisive. The expensive version arrives after your competitors' nephews learn the acronym.
How fast does AEO move?
Faster than classic SEO in one direction, slower in another. Fact fixes propagate quickly — assistants that browse (Perplexity, Copilot, the search-connected modes) reflect a corrected hours listing or a new schema block within days to weeks, because they're reading the live web. Model-memory answers move slower: assistants answering from training data update on training cycles you don't control, which is precisely why the browsing-mode engines and the citation layer deserve your effort first. Practical upshot: treat AEO wins as compounding but lagging — test monthly, not daily, and judge the trend over a quarter the way you would any search investment.
